Charles's Law and gas temperature

Gases change when they are heated or cooled. A cylinder that has just been filled is warm; once it is in cold water its pressure falls. A diver who does not understand why may think their cylinder is leaking or that they were given a short fill.

This lesson explains the link between temperature, pressure and volume.

Objectives

  • State Charles's Law and explain why temperatures use the Kelvin scale
  • Explain why cylinder pressure falls when a warm cylinder enters cold water
  • Describe how temperature affects gas in the body, suit and equipment
