Guidelines
Before every dive
Six habits that keep every trip safe.
Dive within your certification
Only book or join dives that match your current certification level and experience. If a trip's depth, conditions, or requirements are above what you're certified for, talk to the host before booking or work toward the next certification first.
Never dive alone
Always dive with a buddy or as part of a supervised group, agree on hand signals and a dive plan beforehand, and stay within sight of each other underwater.
Check your equipment
Inspect your gear, and your buddy's, before every dive: air supply, BCD, regulator, mask, fins, and dive computer. Service rented or borrowed equipment through a reputable operator.
Respect dive limits
Plan and stick to safe depth, time, and no-decompression limits, follow safe ascent rates, and always complete a safety stop. Monitor your air supply and end the dive with a reserve.
Know the conditions
Check local weather, currents, visibility, and marine life advisories before entering the water, and follow your host or dive operator's briefing - they know the site.
Be ready for an emergency
Know the nearest hyperbaric chamber and emergency contacts for the area you're diving, carry a surface signaling device, and consider dive accident insurance. If you ever feel something is wrong, end the dive - no dive is worth a risk to your safety.
